Day 39: March 21st

"In prayer we go to our enemies, to stand at their side."

Which do we prefer: victory or reconciliation?

Which does God prefer?

Today is Good Friday, a day when we take time to see very clearly how God in Christ deals with enemies.  The love expressed in the cross of Christ is a love that knows no bounds, a love that is for all and for all time.

I heard this story this week and it's a great reminder to us today, both about the power of God's love and the power of liturgy in community:

A mother found her young daughter at home, sobbing in her room.  They had just arrived home from church where the girl's father was the pastor.  Dad hadn't yet returned home, so Mom went in to find out what was wrong.

"Did you see what he did?" she cried.

"What who did, honey?" her mother calmly asked.

"Daddy.  He got up and said that this was Jesus' body broken for you.  And then Daddy broke Jesus!"

The fact is, we've all broken Jesus.  We are all - at times - enemies of God.  But the cross is a sign of solidarity, a sign that God reconciles us to one another and to Godself.  This is a love unknown to the world.  This is a love that can come only from God.
