How can you receive food? [Download brochure, Need Help]

You can come once a month, as necessary, during the hours that the food pantry is open (see above). Bring some form of identification showing your name and address.

Our guests "shop" for food items they can use from the available choices. How much each guest can choose is based on the age and number of members in their family.

The Bethesda Community Food Pantry is located at Bethesda Lutheran Church at 1517 Northwestern Avenue in Ames. Enter the west door of the north wing.

Questions?  Contact the church office at 232-6256.

How can you help? [Download brochure, Want to Help]

  • By offering financial support?  Your gifts help us buy from the Food Bank of Iowa where food is priced at 14 cents per pound. Please make checks payable to Bethesda Lutheran Church and indicate that your donation is for the food pantry.
  • By giving non-perishable food items or fresh garden produce? Sorry, we cannot accept home-made products.
  • By volunteering your time? We need weekly and monthly help stocking shelves, distributing food during open hours, and helping with occasional special events. The food pantry also distributes food baskets prior to Thanksgiving and Christmas for families who might not otherwise be able to celebrate the holidays with a special meal.

More about the food pantry

The Bethesda Community Food Pantry is supported entirely by donations and contributions of volunteers and partner organizations in the Ames and Story County community. It is governed by the Bethesda Community Food Pantry Ministry Team that meets quarterly to review policies and finances. The team consists of 6 to 9 members selected from Bethesda and other partner churches that provide financial or volunteer support, as well as a staff liaison from Bethesda Lutheran Church.

For more information, or to volunteer, leave a message at the church, 232-6256, for food pantry coordinators Pat and Roy Hougen.
